Utsutsukowashi-hen (現壊し編, Reality Breaking Chapter) is an abandoned manga-only prequel to Meakashi-hen. The story focuses on Sonozaki Shion at her all-girl school St. Lucia Academy. It introduces Kosaka Mizuho. It stopped after only three chapters despite the promise to continue.

- Utsutsukowashi-hen is often counted as the answer arc, because it's subtitled as Higurashi no Naku Koro ni Kai. However, ideograms are different. Actual Answer Arcs are written as ひぐらしのなく頃に解, where 解 (Kai) means: "answer, key, explanation, solve, understanding". While Utsutsukowashi-hen's subtitle is written as ひぐらしのなく頃に怪, where 怪 (Kai) means: "mystery, suspicious, wonder". Therefore, it seems to be a small joke of the author, giving the readers another riddle to solve, instead of the answer.
