Higurashi no Naku Koro ni Kaku -Outbreak- (ひぐらしのなく頃に拡～アウトブレイク～, When the Cicadas Cry Expanded -Outbreak-) is the name of the new OVA project for Higurashi no Naku Koro ni. It was confirmed on December 15, 2012, began airing on August 15, 2013.
The project is being helmed by Toshifumi Kawase, the series script supervisor of the previous Higurashi anime projects and the director of Higurashi no Naku Koro ni Rei.
Higurashi Outbreak is set in the same Hinamizawa village of the previous stories. The village has been completely sealed off due to a mysterious virus in 1983, and Sonozaki Mion, Maebara Keiichi and Ryūgū Rena deal with the outbreak. But this time, they don't know if its Oyashiro-sama's curse or a conspiracy. It is also shown that Rika might be infected by the virus. Not much is known about the story yet, but in an interview the makers of the OVA revealed that the ending will differ from the original story. So far, only one episode has been currently aired and is currently unknown how many episodes will air and when the second episode will air.
The original, sound novel version of Outbreak has been confirmed to be featured on Higurashi no Naku Koro ni Hou.

- Ryūgū Rena's father, shot to death by the maddened villagers.
- Irie Kyōsuke, commited suicide by shooting himself in the mouth.
- Numerous villagers from Hinamizawa, were killed by Keiichi and Rena while they were rescuing Satoko.
